Child Custody / Time-Sharing Plans • Your Child's Best Interest
Important Note: Because of a recent change in Florida's Family Law statutes, our courts no longer use the terms "child custody" or "visitation." Child custody has been replaced in favor of "parenting time" and "time-sharing" arrangements. This reflects a profound shift in the way our laws govern child custody decisions. Learn more below.
Divorce is often harder on children than it is on the divorcing couple. Parents must work closely with their lawyers to reach a time-sharing / child custody agreement that puts the children's needs first.
At Jeffrey S. Koster, P.L., we provide experienced, compassionate and aggressive representation to help clients create time-sharing arrangements that are truly best for their family in the long term. The Difference Between "Child Custody" and "Time-Sharing"
Compared to the old child custody system, parents today are seen more as equals in the eyes of the law. There is no longer such a thing as "primary custody" or "secondary custody." Instead, one parent simply has more "parenting time" than the other, unless they split parenting time equally.
Time-sharing plans are much more specific and involved than child custody arrangements. Parents must clearly specify how much time each parent will spend with the child. They must agree on how to resolve decisions regarding healthcare, schooling and other factors involved in raising the child.
In addition, when judges determine how much parenting time each parent should receive, they take many more factors into consideration than they did before.
Making Changes to Your Time-Sharing Plan
If you ever need to make a change to your time-sharing plan, a lawyer can help you ask the court for a modification. A significant modification to your time-sharing plan will likely result in a change in child support.
